This year, weather conditions will delay the potato harvest

Good morning to all our dear readers!

The month of April and the arrival of the sunny days are approaching! This is also the time of the year when early potatoes make their first appearance. The full-season is from June to mid-August so enjoy it to taste these tasty potatoes with a light and thin skin that will accompany your spring and summer recipes to perfection!

However, this year, with weather conditions over the past few days across most of Europe, the potato harvest season will be delayed.

This is the case, for example, in southern Spain, in Andalusia, where torrential rains could cause a slight delay in the early potato harvest. Three weeks of persistent rain helped mitigate the effects of drought. The water currently stored in Spain has increased considerably, reaching up to 54% of the reservoir capacity, ten points more than 15 days ago. This situation is also reflected in the increase in the course of rivers in recent days, however Spain still has the lowest amount of water stored in the last ten years.

Meanwhile, in Cartagena (Murcia), the start of the season is expected in mid-April due to good weather conditions and scarce rainfall.

In France, especially in the northern regions where potato cultivation takes place at the beginning of the season, the rain and snow of recent days, as well as the high overall water table, will cause a delay in the early potato crop season. Generally at this time of year, in some areas such as Beauce, planting should already have started but due to the unusual climate of recent days, planting is not expected until early April if weather permits.

Spring is coming but the low temperatures keep us in winter.
