Good morning to all our potato professionals!
Today we are pleased to meet again to share with you some very important news from the potato sector.
The harvest of new potatoes in Europe, as we mentioned in our previous article, seems to be delayed due to the climatic conditions in recent weeks in various European countries. The same goes for the new French potato.
An example of this is the production area of Noirmoutier, an island located in the Atlantic Ocean, which has just started harvesting in very limited quantities, and it is now possible to harvest only potatoes grown in greenhouses. This year, with low prices, the volume of French potato exports has increased by more than 12% compared to last year.
We have seen in recent weeks that, in addition to the usual countries that buy French potatoes, we have seen a considerable increase in sales to the countries of the eastern part of the European Union. These countries often buy lower grades at lower prices as a rule, which helps to ensure that complicated lots can be sold.
Thus, with a lower volume each week that passes, we are seeing that many farmers are emptying their chambers earlier than expected in order not to run risks, and this means that today, together with the increasing demand for new crops, there is a feeling of rising prices, either in intermediate qualities or mainly in cartonable qualities, which are more difficult to find every day that passes. In addition, rains are announced in the coming days, which will further delay the planting of French ware potatoes.
This year, patience will be needed to enjoy these delicious new potatoes.
