Current situation of plantations and crops

Good morning, everyone!

With the return of the good weather and the favourable climatic conditions of these days, the potato plantations have been able to begin in large quantities in many French producing regions such as Champagne-Ardenne, Beauce and Picardie. However, prices are rising more and more due to the small volumes of lower quality potatoes available on the market.  There are transactions of around 200 euros per tonne for good quality Agata potatoes.

In Spain in Cartagena (Murcia), harvests started with small volumes of potatoes and even lower yields are expected. Currently, prices are above EUR 400 per tonne. Spanish packers will probably start loading potatoes from this region with higher volumes from the first or second week of May. In Seville, due to excessive rainfall, potato harvests are expected to arrive late and yields are expected to be lower than in previous seasons.

As for Italy, small quantities of potatoes are currently being harvested in Sicily, a potato with no skin for the traditional market. The most important volume of potatoes will not arrive until the end of May in the area of Naples first and especially in Avezzano afterwards. Some transactions involving new Italian potatoes have been carried out at a price of 0.50 cents per kilo.
